I knew what was coming next, but could never properly prepare for the shock. Lucien opened his eyes slowly, to reveal the deep blue of Peter’s eyes.
“So schnell? Das ist unmöglich,” Lord Klein said under his breath, sounding incredulous. I did not know German, but it was clear he was surprised.
At the sound of Lord Klein’s voice, Lucien looked up. His face appeared odd, as if every expression was a great effort, as if Peter’s ghost were a puppeteer working an unfamiliar set of marionette strings. But he managed somehow to get up a slight, sad smile and focused on Lord Klein.
“Kaspar, you’re here again,” Peter’s ghost spoke through Lucien’s mouth.
I heard Tom suck in his breath sharply with a sort of hiss, staring at Lucien with something approaching revulsion. I knew what it was, for the Catholic in me was rebelling in the same way. This was possession. A spirit not his own was animating Lucien and speaking in an unfamiliar quality, pulling and stretching his vocal cords to match the voice of a dead man.
