I jumped up and shoved her, but she was taller and stouter and she shoved me, sending me falling back against the tree. My back hit the bark and I slid down, angry tears welling up. I had not decided what to do, when I felt something plop into my lap.
It was a dead bird, a sparrow. I looked up at Mathilde, but she was just as confused and disturbed as I was. Then more came. Dead birds fell from the branches above us, onto the table; into the punch bowl, the pitchers of lemonade, the platters of sandwiches and biscuits; on top of the other children.
For a moment, there was silence, because the songbirds were not singing. Then the children at the table all started jumping up and screaming, Yves loudest of all, in a high-pitched shriek. I got to my feet and looked at Jeanne, whose mouth was open as she joined in the screaming. I was not screaming—I was too confused to scream, as Adrienne, throwing me one horrified stare, ran out the exit. The other children were knocking each other and the chairs over as they raced after her.
